History of Monroe
Monroe is a small town located on the eastern bank of the Connecticut River in Grafton County, New Hampshire. Monroe was originally part of Lyman, Monroe separated and incorporated in 1854. The Town was named Monroe after President James Monroe in 1860. One of its most famous settlers was Peter Paddleford, who was the inventor of the wooden Paddleford Truss for covered bridges. The trusses can still be seen in some of the covered bridges in the area.
Monroe is known for hydro-electric dams located within its boundaries with Comerford Dam and the McIndoe Falls Dam both residing mainly within the town. These dams provide flood control, irrigation, and generation of electric power for transmission to various locations.
Today, the Town of Monroe covers a total area of 23.8 square miles. It has a population of under 900 people (as of 2023) Monroe is located between Littleton and Haverhill on Route 135, which runs nearly parallel to the Connecticut River.
